There’s something rather lovely about having a glut of tomatoes. Well… it is lovely until you realise you have another bowlful sitting on the kitchen worktop and more ripening in the greenhouse! This year the tomato plants on my allotment have been incredibly generous. every time I take some home , I know I have more tomatoes waiting to be picked. I’m certainly not complaining. There is something very satisfying about growing your own food, especially when you can wander dow

When the weather is warm, the last thing I want to do is spend hours standing over a hot stove. Summer is for lingering in the garden a little longer, enjoying the evening sunshine, and making the most of fresh seasonal produce. At this time of year, I always find myself reaching for recipes that are simple, full of flavour and, perhaps most importantly, don't leave the kitchen looking like a whirlwind has swept through it! This easy summer chicken traybake has become one of

There’s something wonderfully nostalgic about packing up a picnic on a warm summer's morning. A wicker basket (or, if you're like me, a rather overstuffed cool bag!), a cosy picnic blanket, and a few homemade treats are all you need for a day of adventure. Living in Dorset, we're spoiled for choice when it comes to picnic spots. Whether it's overlooking the sea at Ringstead Bay, sitting beneath the trees at Wareham Forest, or enjoying the views across the rolling countryside,

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy fresh, vibrant salads that are both quick to prepare and full of flavour. I’ve always loved whipping up a salad that not only tastes great but also sparks a bit of conversation around the table. Today, I’m sharing my ultimate summer salad recipe, complete with a dressing that’s simple yet unforgettable. Whether you’re hosting friends or just want a refreshing meal after a day in the garden, this salad fits the bill perfectly. Fresh ingred

Eye-level view of a golden smoky BBQ beer can chicken resting on a rustic wooden table When the sun is shining and the last thing you want is to heat up the kitchen, firing up the barbecue is a brilliant way to enjoy a hearty meal without the fuss. But if you’re tired of just tossing a salad or grilling sausages, this smoky BBQ beer can chicken recipe is a game changer. It’s juicy, full of flavour, and perfect for sharing with friends or family on a lazy summer afternoon. I’v

Radishes There is always something wonderfully encouraging about the first crops to appear on the allotment. Long before the tomatoes begin blushing red or the beans start climbing in earnest, the radishes quietly get on with the job, pushing their ruby shoulders through the soil almost before you have finished sowing them. They are one of those vegetables that reward impatient gardeners. Within just a few short weeks, neat rows of bright pink globes are ready to harvest, oft

Calendula There is something wonderfully old-fashioned and joyful about growing edible flowers. Once common in cottage gardens and country kitchens, edible blooms are now making a welcome return — adding colour, fragrance and delicate flavour to everything from salads and cakes to teas and summer drinks. Better still, many edible flowers are incredibly easy to grow. Whether you have a sprawling garden, a greenhouse, raised beds or simply a few pots on a patio, you can grow fl

There is something deeply comforting about knowing the slow cooker is working away in the kitchen while the day unfolds at its own unhurried pace. On busy weekdays or relaxed weekends alike, it feels like a quiet promise that supper will be ready, rich with flavour and warmth, without any last-minute fuss. This slow cooker pulled pork has become one of those reliable, crowd-pleasing dishes that fits perfectly into family life. It is wonderfully simple, gloriously forgiving, a

There is a particular magic in the kitchens of our mothers — a quiet alchemy made of routine, patience, and the sort of knowledge that never needed a cookbook. For me, that magic will always smell faintly of warm butter and sugar, and it will always be a Victoria sandwich. Mum’s Victoria sandwiches are second to none. She would hate me saying so, of course, but I have long maintained she could give Merry Berry a very serious run for her money. Her approach is simple, unfussy,

There is a moment each spring when the garden quietly changes gear. The soil begins to warm, the light lingers a little longer in the evenings, and suddenly the rhubarb patch bursts into life as though it has been waiting patiently all winter for its grand entrance. Those first rosy stems feel wonderfully reassuring. They arrive before the soft fruits, before the tomatoes, before the kitchen garden truly gets going — a cheerful reminder that the growing season is properly und

This is the kind of salad that feels like a proper meal — warm, comforting and full of flavour. I make this often when I have leftover roast chicken in the fridge, and its asparagus season. It’s one of my favourite ways to turn simple ingredients into something that feels a bit special. Crispy bacon, tender asparagus, buttery new potatoes and crunchy little gem lettuce all get finished with a drizzle of homemade French dressing. It’s simple, hearty and perfect for spring and s

There’s a particular morning each spring when you step outside and realise the countryside has quietly changed overnight. The air feels softer, the hedgerows have that faint green haze, and the garden suddenly looks as though it has shrugged off winter. Around here, that moment means one thing: asparagus season has arrived. For a few fleeting weeks, farm gates sprout handwritten signs promising Fresh Asparagus Today. Supper plans change. Market baskets fill with green bundles

There is a particular kind of magic reserved for Easter Sunday. It isn’t the chocolate eggs (though they certainly help), nor the hopeful arrival of spring sunshine through freshly cleaned windows. No, the real magic is the slow, joyful gathering of family under one roof — the sound of the front door opening again and again, coats piling up, hugs overlapping, and the kettle never quite making it back to the cupboard. Easter in our home has become the day when the whole family

In a house where the front door never seems to stay closed for long — early shifts, late finishes, band practice and martial art classes, heading back out again five minutes after they’ve walked in — food needs to be quick, filling and reliable. That’s exactly why these freezer sausage, egg and cheese muffins have become a staple in my kitchen. They started as a way to make sure there was always something hot and homemade ready for a bleary-eyed early start, but they’ve turne

At this time of year, my allotment feels quieter. The frantic abundance of summer has long gone, the beds mostly emptied and tucked in for winter. No more armfuls of courgettes, no tomatoes ripening on the vine, no beans daring me to keep up. What’s left standing now is sturdy, dependable, and a little understated: leeks. They’re the last ones out there, really. Tall, mud-splashed, and unfazed by frost, they feel like the allotment’s way of saying, don’t worry, I’ve still got

Valentine’s Day, for me, isn’t really about grand gestures or fancy restaurants. It’s about slowing down, sharing something homemade, and ending the evening with a pudding that feels a bit special. The kind of dessert that says I thought about this , without needing heart-shaped anything. The perfect Valentine pudding should be a few things all at once. It needs to feel indulgent, but not fussy. Romantic, but not sickly sweet. And ideally, it should be something you can enjoy

Sunday is my favourite day of the week — a day for slowing down, being together, and actually enjoying family time rather than rushing through it. The last thing I want on a Family Sunday is to be stuck in the kitchen for hours, juggling pans and watching the clock. That’s why I love meals that take care of themselves while we get on with the important stuff. An easy slow-roast leg of lamb is my go-to. It’s the kind of dish that lets you do the prep, pop it in the oven, and t

When parsnips finally make it from the allotment to the kitchen, they deserve something special. After all the waiting, worrying, and patient growing, it feels only right to let their natural sweetness shine. This honey and cumin recipe has become one of my favourite ways to cook them—simple, comforting, and quietly impressive. Parsnips are at their best in the colder months. A touch of frost turns their starches to sugar, giving them that unmistakable sweetness that works so

There are few desserts that feel as comforting and nostalgic as a good crumble. This apple and raspberry crumble is the perfect balance of sweet and tart, with soft, cinnamon-spiced apples and juicy raspberries bubbling beneath a golden, buttery topping. It’s simple to make, endlessly cozy, and best served warm with custard, cream, or vanilla ice cream. Whether you’re baking for a family dinner or just craving something homely, this crumble never disappoints. During late sum

There’s something deeply reassuring about a pot of homemade soup quietly simmering on the hob. It feels like care in its simplest form — nourishing, economical, and endlessly comforting. When life feels busy or budgets feel tight, soup is what I come back to again and again. One of the biggest reasons I love making soup at home is how far it stretches. A handful of vegetables, a stock cube, and a few cupboard staples can turn into several meals without much effort. It’s one o

There’s something undeniably nostalgic about turning a bowl of tart, jewel-toned crab apples into sparkling jars of homemade jelly. Crab apple jelly is one of those old-fashioned preserves that feels both simple and magical—an everyday fruit transformed into a clear, ruby spread that tastes like autumn and tradition. Whether you’ve gathered a basketful from your garden tree or stumbled upon some at a local market, making crab apple jelly is a rewarding way to slow down, savor

Delicious warm cinnamon iced buns fill the house with a wonderful aroma. The joy of baking cinnamon buns is a sensory and emotional delight, turning a simple activity into a heartfelt experience. Kneading the dough provides a soothing rhythm, and watching it rise feels like witnessing a little miracle. Rolling it out, spreading the sweet ci

Pumpkin soup with cumin is so warming There’s something magical about autumn, isn’t there? The air turns crisp, the leaves crunch underfoot. Kefir is a yogurt-like drink that can easily be made at home and is made with Kefir grains. These are yellow white little rubbery looking masses of live probiotic bacteria. And although they are called grains they do not come from a plant and are not cereal based. If you buy good quality Kefir grains they could literally last you a lifetime. You can buy Kefir kits that will only make a few batches, so my advice is to find someone selling or giving away good quality grains. T
